Today marks National Cat Day – an official holiday designed to assist cats who need good homes while encouraging owners to celebrate their furry companions. There will also likely be an increased push towards adoptions at local shelters!
Cats’ popularity may have recently skyrocketed, yet they have long been a favorite subject of photographers. While dogs tend to provide photographers with plenty of opportunity for striking pictures with big expressions and rapid movements, cats offer them more subtle moments that allow for creative photographs.
“To get the perfect cat portrait photo,” advises Larry Johnson, a traveling photographer specializing in cat portraiture. “Cats can be very subtle creatures – their body muscles tighten up while their eyes become focused; when they do that small relaxation or open their eyes for us to take our picture.”
As part of this year’s celebrations, we have unearthed some of our favorite historic feline photos.
