Adobe’s Lightroom Academy Offers a Free, Interactive Platform for Learning Photography

“What is the best way to learn photography?” is often my response, to which I typically respond: “Pick up a camera and go shoot!” Ultimately, learning photography by actually practicing will help more than studying alone; yet Adobe offers interactive learning courses in its Lightroom Academy that focus on teaching while shooting.

Lightroom Academy Courses Now Live After one and a half years in development and now live across 27 languages, Lightroom Academy courses on composition have gone live today. There are 17 such courses covering everything from basics like the “Rule of Thirds” to more in-depth topics such as juxtaposing images together or layering visual layers together.

These courses include text, visual examples, interactive elements, quizzes and challenges to help teach each lesson. All material is non-gear focused and meant to be consumed on-the-go; while exploring with camera in hand. Each course also offers additional resources should you wish to challenge yourself further.

Just for fun, I completed the “Frame within a Frame” course. The material is organized in an easy-to-read, bite-sized fashion that allowed me to gain something even when only had a few free moments available to me. Plus, its overall design made for smooth navigation – although I found taking part in its 10-question pop quiz slightly challenging than anticipated!

Lightroom Academy won’t just focus on composition. Adobe promises that many additional courses will be released through 2022 to cover post-production, visual thinking, the business of photography, travel photography, food photography and working with photo galleries as well as understanding representation in photography.

All in all, Adobe’s initial attempt at teaching photography appears to be top-notch and we look forward to exploring future courses offered through Lightroom Academy. In the meantime, I plan on reviewing what remains on composition to increase my quiz scores!
