Guide to Embedding Secret Messages in Your Photos

Kansas City Royals (a baseball team, I had to look it up) released a dark, moody preview photo of their new team uniform that gave us only glimpses. But enterprising fans who brightened it received an encouraging note with secret coded message “nice try”.

Hidden Details
2017 has already seen many attempts at using image editing apps to reveal concealed details for amusement’s sake, though not always successfully.

TikTok’s Silhouette Challenge began as an easy and enjoyable way for people to feel empowered about themselves through using heavy red filters to obscure all but the outline of one’s body. Unfortunately, Internet creeps quickly ruined it all: tips for decreasing its effect through desaturation or image brightnessening were quickly put forth as ways of increasing exposure of more than intended – something TikTok is quick to respond to with unending frustration!

As for me personally, when playing The Last of Us: Part Two I used a similar tactic when confronted by zombies – just cranking up the brightness on my TV helped get through some of the darker areas more quickly!

Steganography
Hiding messages in plain view has long been used by the world of spycraft. This technique, known as steganography, allows intelligence agents to conceal messages within almost anything they encounter.

Modern printers offer one such example. Most color laser printers include yellow dots on every sheet they print that contain unique identification numbers of their printer and dates of document printing; these dots encode various information such as when documents were produced etc. It’s likely how Reality Winner was caught; unfortunately though, NSA is remaining silent about his capture.

This may not be quite as humorous as what the Royals did, but still follows along the same principle.
